I’ve been walking in the forest. It’s been a while. The sun is starting to lower. I see a mushroom nestled between a tree and a large, smooth rock. I kneel down to inspect it and it looks up to inspect me.
“Do you know who god is?” I ask the mushroom.
“Me,” It replies, “You. Us. We are all god.”
“How do you know?”
“Can you feel your blood running through your veins? Can you feel your hair run between your fingers like a stream running through the trees? We are all the same. We all have the same fate. We are destined to be devoured by time, but that’s what connects us.”
“How do you know this?” I’m almost afraid to know the answer.
“Because I can feel your soul through my roots, into the ground, and up your legs.” I can feel something pulling on my muscles inside my legs.
“Please go back to being a mushroom.”
The mushroom nods and stills. The prickling in my legs fade, and the sun has set. I walk back home, checking behind me occasionally to make sure there’s no mushrooms in my wake.
